Supporting Conscious Parents in Being Peaceful, Real, and Loving
(even when your children are testing you the most...) |
Keep the Momentum Going |

Hello ,
 |
I recently cuddled a baby, in foster care because the stress of the flood had pushed his already-at-risk parents over the edge.
We know that people often feel the most serious effects of a significant stressful event in their lives between 6 months to a year after the event, and as we all worked together to get out of the immediate emergency, I believe we will continue to work together as we rebuild our communities.
| In the case of the Southern Alberta flood, these effects will range from an expected 40-80% of affected small businesses going bankrupt, to the surfacing of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in many individuals (including children), to the separation of children from their families when the added stress is just too much.
We need to keep our support directed towards those that will need it most over the next many months.
Here are short-term ways you can help:
1) Learn CPR this Saturday, August 17th, from 10 am - 1pm. 100% of all donations (minimum donation $50) will go towards flood relief (The Calgary Foundation). For details contact Roy at lloydtraining@gmail.com. Be sure to mention that you have an interest in CPR for children.
2) Participate in REAP's Be Local campaign focused on locally-focused businesses that need your support to survive.
3) River Cafe on Prince's Island just reopened for business. Go, enjoy! Their season is very short, so they need lots of support.
4) If you know someone suffering from stress, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, as a result of flooding, send them for acupuncture. The Calgary Flood Acupuncture Relief Project offers free acupuncture, following the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder protocol.
5) Support our precious zoo. At Inglewood's SunFest last weekend, I spoke with a representative of the zoo and looked at pictures. I had an unexpected overwhelming cry. My daughter, like many of your children, grew up with a zoo pass, and our zoo and its amazing international conservation efforts have been an integral part of her childhood in Calgary. 2BY2 Rebuild the Zoo.
6) Adopt a family from High River. Many are still living in shelters or temporary housing.
7) Keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities to help. For flood-affected families and businesses, the hard part - rebuilding - is still ahead. Whenever possible, choose to spend money at flood-affected small businesses that might not survive without your efforts.
